Comparing v2 to v1 tells you what changed. Comparing v2 to the master tells you whether it's right.

Master File Comparison is Aproove's file comparison software feature mode of Compare View for checking a proof against a reference asset rather than against a previous version of itself. Reviewers can compare any proof or proof version against any other proof or proof version in the project, including a master template, an approved brand reference, a planogram, a regulatory disclosure layout, or even a different page within the same document. The comparison runs side by side, synced for zoom and pan, with overlay and pixel-level difference highlighting available.

What it is

Most proofing tools include a basic file comparison tool for version comparison: the current version of a file against its previous version, to see what changed between rounds. That is useful, but it answers only one question: "what did the designer change?" It does not answer the harder question: "does this file match the spec?"

Aproove’s Master File Comparison feature answers the second question. The reference is a separate asset, usually a master template, brand standard, regulatory layout, or approved previous edition. The reviewer puts the working proof on one side and the master on the other, and Aproove renders both at the same scale, synced for navigation, with the same difference-highlighting modes that version comparison uses.

Because Aproove pre-renders every uploaded file into the same tiled viewing format, the master and the proof can be different file types. A PDF proof can be compared against an InDesign master that was uploaded as a reference. A regional artwork can be compared against the headquarters master, making Aproove one of the top tools for managing digital artwork approval workflows. A new edition of a product label can be compared against last year's approved label that still lives in the project.

How it works

Side-by-side, synced. The working proof opens on the left, the reference master on the right. Zoom on one side and the other zooms with it. Pan on one side and the other pans with it. The arrow keys advance both sides by a page at the same time. If the two assets need to be navigated independently (different page counts, different orientations), the link can be decoupled with one click.

Three difference visualization modes. All three apply to master file comparison, not just to version comparison:

  • Side-by-side view shows both assets at the same scale for visual comparison.
  • Overlay mode blends the two through a transparency slider. As the slider moves, the reference fades over the working proof and content that differs becomes visible.
  • Highlight Differences runs Aproove's change detection across the two. In Ghosted mode, content that matches the master is dimmed and content that differs displays at full value. In Pixel mode, areas where pixels are new appear in green and areas where pixels are removed appear in red, blinking at pixel-level precision.

Any proof against any proof. The reference does not have to be a "designated" master. Any file in the project can be the comparison target: another proof, a previous version of any proof, a reference document uploaded for spec, or a different page of the same document being checked for consistency.

Notes and annotations. Reviewers can add notes to the working proof while in Compare View, with the master visible alongside for context. Notes from previous versions can be displayed during comparison so the reviewer can verify amendments against both the previous round and the master.

Automation through naming and sections. When the comparison pattern is predictable (a regional artwork always compared against the master of the same name, a label revision always compared against the prior approved edition), Aproove can automate the pairing through naming conventions and section structure. The comparison opens to the right reference automatically rather than requiring the reviewer to find it.

Benefits

  • Validate against the spec, not just the prior round. A proof that perfectly matches its previous version can still fail to match the master. Master File Comparison checks the right reference.
  • Cross-format reference. The master and the working proof can be different file types. Aproove renders both into the same tiled view for comparison.
  • Cross-page reference. Compare page 3 of a proof against page 1 to check spread consistency, or against a master template that lives on a different page entirely.
  • Pixel-level precision. The same change detection that powers version comparison applies to master comparison. Color shifts, position changes, and content edits surface in green and red pixel highlighting.
  • Side-by-side with synchronization. Zoom, pan, and page navigation are locked between the two views so the reviewer's eye stays on the same area of both files.
  • Automatable through naming conventions and sections. When the master-to-working-file pairing follows a predictable pattern, Aproove can open the comparison to the right reference automatically.
  • Same Compare View, different reference. Reviewers already familiar with version comparison use the same interface and the same difference-highlighting modes for master comparison. No new tool to learn.

Who it's for

  • Brand and design teams verifying that regional or localized artwork matches the brand master.
  • Packaging and labeling teams comparing a new edition against the last approved edition.
  • Regulatory and compliance reviewers checking that disclosure layouts match the approved template.
  • Merchandising and category teams validating planograms or layouts against the approved planning document.
  • Production and prepress operators confirming that the file going to press matches the file that was approved.
