By round 20, your reviewers shouldn't be reading the file from page one again
Aproove's document comparison software feature uses component-level understanding of every file (the same atomic breakdown that powers AI Agents) means we can show reviewers precisely what changed between versions. Side by side. Overlay. Ghosted. Pixel.

What it is
Smart Version Comparison is Aproove’s document comparison software that lets reviewers see exactly what changed between any two versions of an asset, or between any two assets in the same project. Because Aproove already understands the file at the component level, comparison happens against that structured representation, not a flattened image. Every text edit, image swap, color shift, and pixel-level move is visible.
Four comparison modes are available:
- Side by side text comparison. The two versions display in synchronized panes. Zoom one, the other zooms. Pan one, the other pans. Notes from prior versions stay visible so reviewers can confirm requested changes were made.
- Overlay. A transparency slider fades one version into the other, exposing differences as the layers cross. Useful for catching positional and structural shifts.
- Ghosted. Content that has not changed fades into the background. What changed stays at full value. Built for dense, busy pages (catalogs, mailers, regulatory documents) where the eye gets lost.
- Pixel. New pixels blink green. Removed pixels blink red. The change detector catches differences down to a single pixel: subtle color corrections, half-millimeter image shifts, the kind of thing a human eye misses.
Reviewers can compare across versions of the same file, across different files, even across different file formats—from comparing Word documents side by side to checking a PDF against a TIFF or a creative asset against a master template.
Why it matters
In compliance-heavy industries, review is rarely one and done. A regulated marketing piece can go through fifteen, twenty, sometimes more rounds before final approval. Each round changes a paragraph here, a disclosure there, a logo treatment somewhere else. Without precise change visibility, every reviewer has to read every page again to find what moved. Hours per round, multiplied across rounds, multiplied across reviewers.
We have seen this pattern at scale. One client in Medicare Marketing manages 300-page documents that go through 20+ rounds of review. At file-level review, that is 6,000 pages of reading per document, often by reviewers who only need to validate a handful of specific changes. At change level, the same review takes a fraction of the time, with higher accuracy, because reviewers see only what they need to see.
Version Comparison makes change-level review the default. Combined with Aproove's atomic breakdown, it means a reviewer can land directly on the paragraph that moved, the image that was swapped, or the pixel that shifted, and confirm or reject the change without rereading the rest of the document.
How it works in practice
- Open Compare View. From any proof in the Review Interface, click the Compare tool.
- Select what to compare. By default, the latest version sits on the left and the previous version on the right. Reviewers can flip the order or pick any other proof or version in the project, including a master file or template.
- Choose your comparison mode. Side by side, overlay, ghosted, or pixel. Switch between modes as needed.
- See the changes, not the file. Aproove's change detection highlights the differences. Notes and comments from previous rounds remain visible so reviewers can confirm requested edits were applied.
- Annotate and decide. Reviewers can add notes on the latest version while in Compare View, and comment on existing notes from prior versions. The audit trail captures everything.
Benefits
- Multi-round review stops compounding. Round 20 of a 300-page document does not mean reading 300 pages again. Reviewers see what changed and act on it.
- Subtle changes become visible. Pixel comparison surfaces the kind of half-percent color shift or one-pixel image move that the human eye misses. Critical for regulated and brand-sensitive content.
- Cross-format comparison works. PDFs against TIFFs, creative against master templates, output A against output B. Aproove's atomic understanding is format-aware, so comparison does not require matching extensions.
- The audit trail tells the full story. Every change, every note, every approval is captured against the version where it occurred. Compliance and regulatory reviewers see not just the final output but the trail that produced it.
- Brand consistency holds across markets. When the same asset ships in twelve regions, comparison against the master ensures every market version stays true to the original.
- Reviewers stay in flow. Notes and comments are preserved across versions in Compare View. No switching tabs, no losing context, no toggling between tools.
Who it's for
- Regulated industries with multi-round review: pharma, healthcare, financial services, Medicare and Medicaid marketing, legal disclosures.
- Brand and creative governance teams: enterprises maintaining brand consistency across markets, regions, or partner agencies.
- Production and prepress teams: where a half-pixel shift or an unintended color change is a print failure.
- Agencies running high-volume cycles: campaign and catalog work where change accuracy at speed is the entire game.
Under the hood
Version Comparison operates against Aproove's structured file representation, the same atomic breakdown produced at upload that powers AI Agents and component-level workflow. The change detection engine compares text content, layered objects, image regions, and pixel data between versions, including across different source formats. Synchronized pan and zoom run on the proprietary tiling engine, which streams deep-zoom views of both proofs from secure cloud infrastructure. Notes and annotations remain bound to the version on which they were created and stay visible in Compare View so prior context travels with the review. Compare View is governed by the same role-based access controls as the rest of the platform: reviewers only see what they are permitted to see.
Built for regulated environments where failures create real risk
Insurance, healthcare, and enterprise teams face unique approval challenges. Aproove handles state-by-state variations, mandated language, FDA submissions, and multi-geography brand governance without breaking a sweat.
